Allergies, Cold, or Flu?

Allergies

Common Symptoms1, 2

  • Runny nose
  • Blocked nose
  • Sneezing
  • Watery, itchy eyes
  • Itchy skin rash

Symptoms last as long as the allergens are present

Prevention1

Avoid allergens, such as pollen, house dust mites, mold, pet dander, cockroaches.

Treatment1

  • Avoid allergens (things that you’re allergic to)
  • Antihistamines such as Zyrtec-R
  • Decongestants such as Zyrtec-D
  • Nasal steroids
  • See your doctor of pharmacist if the symptoms are disturbing your sleep or daily activities3

Cold

Common Symptoms1

  • Runny nose
  • Blocked nose
  • Sore throat
  • Cough

Symptoms last 1-2 weeks

Prevention1

  • Wash your hands often.
  • Avoid close contact with anyone who has a cold.

Treatment1

  • Get plenty of rest
  • Stay hydrated
  • Decongestants
  • Aspirin (ages 18 and up), acetaminophen, or ibuprofen for aches and pains

Flu

Common Symptoms1

  • High fever
  • Headaches, aches and pains
  • Weakness, exhaustion
  • Cough, chest discomfort

Symptoms usually last 1-2 weeks

Prevention1

  • Get the flu vaccine each year.
  • Wash your hands often.
  • Avoid close contact with anyone who has the flu.

Treatment1

  • Get plenty of rest
  • Stay hydrated
  • Aspirin (ages 18 and up), acetaminophen, or ibuprofen for aches, pains, and fever
  • Antiviral medicines (see your doctor)
